Baseball downs Penn College in season finale

READING, PA - Josh Miiller again turned in a gem of a pitching performance against Penn College as Penn State Berks won 4-2 in United East action on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions finish the year 11-24 overall and 10-11 in the United East, while the Wildcats finished second in the regular season standings after going 20-18 on the season and 15-5 in conference play.

Berks came out of the gate hot with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Colin Templin and Nick Bergeman opened with back-to-back singles and Kolbie Reeser added a bunt single to score Templin from third with the first run of the game. Chad Evans singled up the middle to bring in Bergeman from second, while Reeser and Evans moved up a base on the late throw to home. Griffin Kay grounded out to short, but it brought in Reeser from third with the third run of the inning.

The Nittany Lions added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the third. Evans was hit by a pitch, Kay singled up the middle and Colin Amerine delivered an RBI single down the right field line for a 4-0 lead.

The score remained that way until the top of the ninth when Penn College got a lead off single followed by a fly out to right field. Another single put runners on first and second. The next batted singled to bring in a run, followed by a walk to load the bases with one out. Miiller was lifted for Tommy Peiffley, who gave up a sacrifice fly to center and strikeout to end the game with his third save of the season.

Miiller, who is the reigning United East Player of the Week after a complete-game shutout last Thursday over the Wildcats, picked up where he left off. The junior right-hander allowed seven hits and two runs, while striking out nine batters in 8.1 innings of work. Miiller faced just three batters in three innings and did not allow a single base runner beyond second base until the final inning. He had a 15 inning scoreless streak against Penn College that was snapped in the final inning. In his two games against the Wildcats, Miiller finished 2-0 with 12 hits and two runs allowed, while striking out 18 batters in 15.1 innings of work.

Bergeman finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Amerine was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Reeser and Evans (stolen base) each had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Templin had a hit and a run scored, Kay had a hit and an RBI, Rayjay Marmolejos recorded a single.

The Nittany Lions bit farewell to seniors Chad Evans, Tyler McGarvey, Sam Perrone, and Colin Templin. With the bulk of the team set to return, along with the incoming freshmen and transfers, head coach Erik Amspacher the Nittany Lions will look to make their way make their way back to the conference postseason tournament next season.
