Baseball splits doubleheader with Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team split with Penn State Abington in an United East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks won rallied late for a 5-4 victory in game one, but Abington salvaged the split on the day by taking game two by a 16-8 margin.

Berks, who took two of three games in the series, is now 8-12 overall and 7-5 in the United East, while Abington goes to 12-13 on the year and 7-5 in the conference.

In the opener, Abington scored a run in the top of the first, but Berks bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom half when David Rudisill drove in Colin Templin and Nick Bergeman with a single to center field. The visitors scored twice in the second to take a 3-2 lead and extended it with a run in the top of the fifth. Berks tied it up in the bottom of the fifth when Jonathan Myers scored from the third on a wild pitch and Bergeman scored from second base on an Abington error.

Ryan Spatz worked out of an one-out, bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth with back-to-back strikeouts to end threat. Berks carried that momentum into the bottom half of the inning. Logan Ewert doubled down the left field line and came around to score on a two-out single to left field by Templin.

Tommy Peifley came on in the top of the seventh and issued a walk to the leadoff batter. The sophomore right-hander got a fly out to center and then a pop-up to Bergeman at first, who then tug the baserunner for a game-ending double play.

Josh Miiller allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned), while striking out two in 5.0 innings of work. Spatz (1-0) earned the win with his scoreless inning of relief and Peifley picked up his second save of the season.

Rudisill finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Bergeman was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Templin (RBI), Ewert, and Myers (two stolen bases) all had a hit and scored a run.

In the second game, Abington scored one in the second and three times in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead. They tacked on on more in the fifth, three in the in the seventh and broke it open with eight in the eighth. Berks scored once in the bottom of the eighth and then made things interesting with seven runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Bergeman finished 2-for-6 with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored, while Kolbie Reeser was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Riley Weaver went 1-for-2 with two RBI, Grant Jacoby was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored.

Sam Perrone allowed six hits and one run scored in 2.1 innings of relief, while Aloysius Battista struck out two in one inning of scoreless relief.

The Nittany Lions travel to Albright College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 11 at 3:30 p.m.
