Evans smashes walk-off homer against Abington

READING, PA - Chad Evans drove a three-run shot deep over the wall in left field to give Penn State Berks a walk-off 6-3 victory over Penn State Abington in the opening game of the United East series on Friday afternoon.

Berks won its fourth straight game to improve to 7-11 overall and 6-4 in the United East, while Abington falls to 11-12 on the season and 6-4 in the conference.

Ricky Peters and Greg Wiley were involved in a pitcher's duel, with the lefty's each putting up zeroes on the scoreboard in the first two innings.

In the top of the third, Abington started out the inning with an infield single and bunt single, followed by a walk to load the bases with no one out. Peters got a fly out to left field and strike out, but pitch just off the plate on a full count forced a run in from third. Peters got a ground out to second to end the threat.

Jonathan Myers led off the third with a bunt single and moved up a base when Colin Templin was hit by a pitch. Nick Bergman advanced both runners a base with a sacrifice bunt and Kolbie Reeser brought in Myers with a tying run on a ground out to shortstop.

A two-out two-run homer to right by Justin Fogel in the top of the fifth gave the visitors 3-1 lead. Berks got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Nick Bergeman smoked a solo shot to left to make it 3-2.

In the seventh, Bergeman walked and Reeser roped a ground-rule double down the left field line to put runners on second and third with one out. Evans put a charge into one to center that was stayed in the yard, but was more than deep enough to score Bergeman from third to even the game at 3-all.

Sam Perrone, in his second inning of relief, tossed his second straight 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth. With the score still tied, Abington got a leadoff single to start the ninth. After a pop up in foul ground to Colin Amerine, Perrone induced an inning-ending double play that Evans fielded up the middle, tug the bag and fired to first for the out.

In the bottom of the ninth, Templin was again hit by a pitch to get things going. Bergeman tried to move him up with a sacrifice bunt, but the pitcher made an impressive diving catch on the play and just missed doubling Templin off first. Reeser stroked a line drive single over the third baseman's head to put runners on first and second with the cleanup man coming to the plate. After a pitch in the dirt, Evans sent a moon shot to left that got sent the dugout and fans into an instant frenzy. Evans was mobbed at home by his teammates and greeted with an ice bath as the Nittany Lions celebrated the walk off win.

Perrone earned his first win of the season after tossing 3.0 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief. Peters final stat line was 6.0 innings pitched with six hits and three runs allowed, while striking out six batters.

Evans went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and a run scored, while Bergeman was 2-for-3 with a homer, RBI, and two runs scored. Reeser and Colin Amerine both had a single and double, while Templin and Myers each had a hit and scored a run.

Berks will host Abington in an United East doubleheader to finish off the series tomorrow, beginning at 12 p.m.
