Baseball sweeps Wells on the road

AURORA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks baseball team won by scores of 7-1 and 9-8 to earn a pair of wins over Wells College in United East action. Those two wins, along with a 17-10 triumph on Sunday, gave the Nittany Lions a three-game series sweep over the Express.

With the wins, Berks improves to 6-11 on the season and 5-4 in the United East, while the Express fall to 7-15 overall and 1-8 in conference action.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first inning. They added a single run in the third and fourth, before Wells scratched out a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-1. Berks added another insurance run in the top of the seventh.

The opening inning run support was more than enough with the way staff ace Josh Miiller pitched on Monday afternoon. The junior right-hander allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out seven batters in 6.0 innings of work. Aloysius Battista allowed one hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless inning of relief. Miiller got an inning ending double play in the first inning and did not allow a runner in scoring position until the fourth inning. Wells scored its lone run in the fifth and the damage was limited with Miiller getting another inning ending double play.

Chad Evans went 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, and a run scored, while Kolbie Reeser was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Colin Templin finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Joey McGann added a hit and an RBI.

Berks scored once in the top of the first in game two, but the Express took the lead with two runs in the bottom half. They added one more in the bottom of second, but the Nittany Lions hopped back ahead with there in the third to lead 4-3. The Nittany Lions added two in the fourth and two in the fifth to extend their lead to 8-3. Wells chipped away at the lead and got to within 8-7 after seven innings. Berks added an insurance run in the ninth, which turned out to be huge as the Express added a score and had a runner on second base. Tommy Peifley, who earned the win in relief on Sunday, earned the save after getting a fly out to deep center to end the game.

Peifley recorded his first save this season after 2.1 innings of relief. The sophomore right-hander allowed three hits and one run, while striking out one. Reeser picked up his first win of the season on the mount after scattering eight hits and four runs, while striking out two in 5.0 innings of work. Jake Murgitroyde allowed three runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings of middle relief.

Evans again swung a big bat for the Nittany Lions, finishing 3-for-4 with two homers, one stolen base, three RBi, and two runs scored. The senior second baseman has raised his team-leading home run total to six this season. David Rudisill added his third homer of the season with a solo shot in the third, as part of back-to-back long balls with Evans. Jonathan Myers was 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base, runs scored and an RBI, while Nick Bergeman was 1-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs scored. Jase Graybill and Rayjay Marmolejos both had a hit and scored a run.

Berks will host Penn State Abington in a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a single-game on Friday, April 7 at 3 p.m.
