Baseball splits with Penn College on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team split with Penn College in an United East doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won 3-0 in a pitcher's duel in game one, then fell 15-4 in the second game.

Chad Evans, Tyler McGarvey, Sam Perrone, and Colin Templin ever honored for Senior Day after the conclusion of the second game.

In the first game, Josh Miiller turned in his finest performance of the season and one of his finest of his college career. He and Justin Porter both put up zeroes on the scoreboard of the first four innings. Against Miiller, the Wildcats scratched out a single in both the first and second innings, but the runners were left stranded on first both times. Miiller tossed a 1-2-3 third inning and worked around a one-out double in the fourth to keep Penn College off the board. In that same time frame, Porter pitched a 1-2-3 first inning, then in the second got out of unscathed when Evans doubled to center and advanced to third on a fly out. Porter also did not allow any runs in the next two innings, despite a one-out single by Jonathan Myers in the third and leadoff single by Kolbie Reeser in the fourth.

Miiller got a pair of quick outs in the fifth, then surrendered a single up the middle before getting an inning ending groundout to third. In the bottom of the fifth, the Berks offense went to work. Logan Ewert led off with a double down the left field line, then moved to third on a groundout to the right side by Bryce Kelly. Myers singled up the middle to bring in Ewert with the first run of the game. Templin doubled off the fence in left field and Myers got to third on the play. Nick Bergeman followed with a double in the left center gap to bring in Myers and Templin to give Berks a 3-0 lead.

Miller worked around a two-out baserunner in the sixth inning. He struck out the leadoff man before surrendering a double in the top of the seventh. The junior right-hander then got a grounder back to himself and strikeout to end the game. Miiller's final line was five hits and no runs with nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work. It was the second complete-game and first shutout of his college career.

Myers finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Bergeman was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Templin and Ewert each had a hit and scored a run. Reeser, Evans, and Kelly all recorded a hit.

In the second game, the Wildcats scored twice in the top of the first and added nine in the fourth to build an 11-0 cushion. The teams exchanged runs in the sixth and Berks added two more in teh seventh, but Penn College tacked on three more in the eighth. The Nittany Lions scored once more in their final at-bat.

Evans had a solo homer in the sixth inning to give him 13 for the season, which is tied with Toby Welk for the most in a single-season. Rayjay Marmolejos was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Myers and Templin both had a hit and an RBI. Bryce Kelly had a double and scored a run and Grant Jacoby recorded a single. Wade Kaminksi finished with one RBI.

Perrone struck out four batters in 3.1 innings pitched. The senior right-hander picked off a runner from first in the top of the third, giving him four for his career which is tied for third all-time. Tommy Peifley had two strike outs in 2.1 innings of relief and Aloysius Battista added two strikeouts in one inning of work.

With rain in the forecast all weekend, the final game of the series is postponed. At this time, no make-up date has been set.
