Baseball splits doubleheader with St. Mary's

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team split its doubleheader with St. Mary's College in United East action on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won the opener, 8-7, before falling 18-1 to the Seahawks in the the nightcap of the twinbill.

The Nittany Lions stayed in the playoff hunt with the split as they move to 9-21 overall and 8-9 in the United East, while the Seahawks now sit at 8-15 on the season and 6-9 in the conference.

In the opener, St. Mary's scored twice in the first and once more in the second to build a 3-0 lead. Berks scored six unanswered runs with two apiece in the third, fourth and fifth to go ahead 6-3. The Seahawks evened the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, but the Nittany Lions again scored a pair of runs to go back ahead 8-6. In the top of the seventh, St. Mary's got a leadoff home run, but that is as close as they would get as Berks held on for the win.

Kolbie Reeser finished 3-for-4 with a double, homer, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Colin Templin went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Griffin Kay added two hits and a run scored, Colin Amerine had a solo home run. Jonathan Myers had a hit and scored a run, Nick Bergman had a hit and drove in a run.

Josh Miiller allowed five hits and three runs (one earned), while striking out three in 5.0 innings of work. Tom Peiffley picked up the win in one inning of relief and Jake Murgitroyde secured the save, his third of the season, with one inning pitched.

In the second game, the Seahawks scored three in the second inning and two more in the fifth. The Nittany Lions got a run back in the sixth, but St. Mary's combined for 13 runs over their final three at-bats to runaway with the game.

Jase Graybill notched the lone RBI, Reeser had a hit and scored a run. Templin, Chad Evans, and Tyler McGarvey all had a hit and stole a base.

The teams will finish off the three-game series on Saturday, April 22 at 11 a.m.
