Nittany Lions rally late; fall in extras

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team came to life in the bottom of the ninth to force extras, but fell on the wrong side of a 14-13 decision in 10 innings to St. Mary's College in United East action on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to even the contest at 13-all, but the Seahawks scored a run in the top of the 10th and worked around a two-out walk in the bottom to secure the win.

Berks went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first behind a two-run home run from Chad Evans, but the Seahawks came back with two of their own in the top of the second. St. Mary's went ahead 11-5  in the sixth and were ahead 13-7 going into the ninth.

In the ninth, Kolbie Reeser led off with a walk and Evans smashed his second homer of the game --another two-run shot-- to left field to make it 13-9. Nick Bergeman followed with a double off the fence in center, followed by a single to right field by Griffin Kay. Colin Amerine walked to load the bases and Logan Ewert drove in Bergeman with a single to left center. Bryce Kelly sent a chopper to third base that brought in Kay from third, but Amerine was forced out on the play. Colin Templin singled through the left side to bring in another run, then Jonathan Myers was hit by a pitch to load the bases back up. Reeser singled to left field to bring in Kelly from third with the tying run. The Seahawks got a force out at home and a strikeout looking to escape the jam.

Evans finished 2-for-4 with two homers, two stolen bases, five RBI, and three runs scored, while Kay (solo homer) and Reese both had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Kelly had a hit, an RBI, and scored twice, Templin and Ewert each had a hit, an RBI, and scored a run.

Aloysius Battista allowed four hits and one run in 2.1 innings of relief, while Sam Perrone allowed one unearned run in 1.1 innings. Jake Murgitroyde struck out three and let up one unearned run in 1.0 innings of work.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lebanon Valley College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m.
