Baseball tops Wells in wild opener

AURORA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks baseball team defeated Wells College, 17-10, in the opening game of an United East three-game series on Sunday afternoon in a game that featured eight lead changes.

The Nittany Lions move to 4-11 on the season and 3-4 in the United East, while the Express fall to 7-13 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

Wells scored in the bottom of the first, before the teams put up matching totals of two runs in the second and four each in the fourth to make it 7-6 in the favor of the Express. Berks scored twice in the top of the sixth, but Wells countered with three in their half to lead 10-8. The Nittany Lions scored nine unanswered runs over their final three innings to secure the win.

Ricky Peters allowed seven runs (six earned) and struck out two in 4.2 innings to open the game, while Sam Perrone allowed three runs in 1.2 innings of relief work. Tommy Peifley got out of a bases loaded jam with an inning ending double play in the bottom of the seventh to keep the Nittany Lions deficit to one run at the time. The sophomore right-hander worked a 1-2-3 eighth and ninth inning to earn his first victory on the mound with Berks. Peifley's final line was no hits allowed with one strikeout in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The Berks offense combined for 16 hits, six of which went for extra bases, while also racking up four stolen bases. Joey McGann finished 4-for-5 with two doubles, one stolen base, three RBI, and a run scored, while David Rudisill was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and three runs scored. Colin Amerine, Jase Graybill (double), and Jonathan Myers (triple) all had two hits and the trio combined for eight RBI and six runs scored. Chad Evans had two hits and scored four runs, Kolbie Reeser added one hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Monday, April 3 with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1 p.m.
