Baseball tops Eastern Nazarene in season opener

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team opened up the 2023 season with a 6-3 victory over Eastern Nazarene College at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach on Saturday night.

The Nittany Lions (1-0) won their season opener for the first time since the 2019 season, while ENC drops to 3-2 on the season.

Josh Miiller turned in a phenomenal performance on the mound for Berks. The junior right-hander picked up the win after scattering six hits and allowing three runs, while striking out five batters in 6.2 innings of work. Sam Perrone came on in relief with bases loaded in the top of the seventh and forced a groundout to short to get out of the jam. Perrone finished with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of no-hit, scoreless relief. Jake Murgitroyde recorded the save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Nick Bergman was 2-for-4 with a triple, one RBI, and two runs scored, Logan Ewert and Rayjay Marmolejos both had a hit and an RBI. Colin Templin and Griffin Kay both had a hit and a run scored. Kolbie Reeser added a run and an RBI, Tyler McGarvey had one hit.

ENC's Tyler Bean led off the game with a triple down the right field line, but Miiller left him stranded with a groundout and a pair of fly outs. In the bottom half of the inning, Templin led off with an infield single and was later driven in by Reeser. Bergeman scored on an infield single by Ewert and Reeser scored on the play when the ball got away from the first baseman.

The leadoff man doubled in the top of the second and later came around to score on a hit to left to make it 3-1. The Nittany Lions responded with a run in the bottom when Bergeman scored on a ENC miscue for a 4-1 lead. Berks extended the lead to 5-1 in the fourth when Kay led off with a single and came around to score on a single to left center by Bergeman.

Eastern Nazarene scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3. In the bottom half of the inning, Marmolejos lined a single to left field to score Chad Evans, who led off the inning with a walk.

The Nittany Lions will play a doubleheader against Manhattanville College on Sunday, March 5. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 9 a.m.
