Second half surge propels MBB to win over Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team went on a 19-0 run to start the second half and held off a late rally to pick up a 90-81 victory over Penn State Abington in the United East opener on Tuesday night.

Berks improves to 2-5 on the year and 1-0 in the United East, while Abington falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Berks turned its 46-38 halftime deficit into a 54-46 lead just 2:41 into the second half. Marquis Ferreira scored eight straight points right out of the break and registered 14 of the 19 points on the second half surge. Berks stayed red hot over the next couple of minutes to build a 70-50 lead with 13:42 left in the game.

Abington was able to get its deficit to single-digits with 2:49 to play and trailed by as little seven points (84-77) with 1:30 to play. Andre Ballard scored on a pair of driving layups and Josh Mingledolph added a bucket down the stretch to hold off any comeback efforts by Abington.

Berks finished the game with a season-high 14 3-pointers made, nine of which came in the second half. Ferreira and Ballard each drained four from long range, while Juorsh Ruiz added three and Luke Collins made two. Ballard led all scorers with a career-high 29 points, while Ferreira had a career-best 23 points and Ruiz matched a personal-best with 11. Mingledolph chipped in 13 points, while Collins had 10 as all five Berks starters reached double figures in scoring.

Collins dished out a career-best six assists, followed by Mingledolph with five. Ballard, Ruiz, and Ferreira all handed out three assists. Ruiz had a team-high seven boards and tied Ferreira with team-high in steals with four each. Ballard had five boards to go along with three steals in 37 quality minutes of action.

Abington was led by Alex Podolski with 24 points, while Jake Schalki added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Christian Niles rounded out the Abington players finishing in double digits with 10 points.

The Nittany Lions will have a quick turn around with a non-conference game at Immaculata University on Wednedsay, November 29 at 8 p.m.
