Women's soccer advances in penalty kicks to United East Finals

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team edged Penn State Harrisburg in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in the United East Volt Division Final on Thursday night.

Berks advanced after converting on four PKs, while Harrisburg made just three. Sophia Gonzalez and Sydney Mulka, who were both solid in regulation and overtime, continued their strong play in net in the penalty kick rounds.

In the first round of PKs, Gonzalez made a diving stop to her left, while Diana Pon had a successful attempt. In the second round, Kelsy Moschak converted her shot, while Mulka stopped the Berks attempt to even the score at 1-1. The third round had successful attempts by Abigail Frew and Sara Hathaway. Gonzalez made another athletic stop in the fourth round and Maggie Sheets converted her shot to give Berks a 3-2 margin. Sydney Hemler evened the PKs at 3-3 in the fifth round, but Carly Fox put a shot in the top right corner to give Berks the winning tally.

Fox and her teammates jumped in celebration on the field, while the fans roared in the crowd as Berks will head to the conference finals for the 11th straight year.

In the first half, Harrisburg outshot Berks by a 9-2 margin (4-2 on goal), but the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie. The second half looked was heading in the same direction before a brief scoring frenzy. At the 80:56 mark of the contest, Pon sent a corner kick to the far back corner of the box, that Madi Craley passed out of the air to Hathaway on the right side of the box. The senior forward then delivered a shot inside the right post to give Berks a 1-0 lead.

With the way the contest was going, that seemed like it would be enough to propel Berks to the win. But Harrisburg wasted no time, quickly working the ball down field, capped off by Katelyn Monette finding Serenity Hill, who found the back of the net just inside the near post.

In the first overtime, Harrisburg rifled off four shots and had two corners, but Gonzalez and the Berks defense was able to keep them off the scoreboard. Harrisburg generated the only offense in the second overtime period, but again were not able to find the back of the net to set up the exciting finish in penalty kicks.

For the game, Gonzalez finished with 10 saves and Mulka had four. Harrisburg outshot Berks by a 24-6 margin (12-5 on goal) and held an 11-10 advantage in corner kicks.

Berks will host Bryn Athyn College in the United East Finals on Sunday, November 5 at 1 p.m. Bryn Athyn won the Skye Division title after topping Cairn University, 2-0, on Thursday evening. The winner of Sunday's contest will earn the conference's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament.
