Women's soccer wins 9th conference title, Hathaway named MVP

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team punched its ticket to the 2023 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament after shutting out Bryn Athyn College,3-0, in the United East Finals on Sunday afternoon. Sara Hathaway was named the United East Tournament MVP after recording a pair of assists in the title game on Sunday.

The Nittany Lions won their second straight United East Championship and the 9th conference crown overall in program history.

Berks set up it scoring in the early going when a shot by Diana Pon was blocked out of bounds by a Bryn Athyn defender. Pon inserted a corner kick that Maya Dolan header past the keeper inside the right post for a 1-0 lead at the 10:54 mark of the contest.

Bryn Athyn quickly came down the field and Kira Bradley unleashed a line drive on goal, but Sophia Gonzalez turned it away to keep the lead. Bryn Athyn's ensuing corner kick was knocked out of harms way by the Berks defense.

Berks had several corner kicks and shots on goal over the rest of the first half, but Chloe Munyon was able to deny them from finding the back of the net.

Adriana Lepera provided some breathing room with a goal in the 49th minute, with Hathaway adding the first of her two assists. Hathaway dribbled through the midfield and delivered a pass on the ground through the Bryn Athyn back line, hitting Lepera in stride. Lepera took a few dribbles and beat the keeper with the line drive into the net.

In the 57th minute, Hathaway found Paige Borkowski with another excellent pass through traffic. Borkowski took a few quick dribbles and booted a curling shot past the keeper into the far back corner to give the Nittany Lions a comfortable 3-0 cushion.

For the game, Berks outshot Bryn Athyn by a 23-8 margin (14-4 on goal) and held an 11-5 advantage on corner kicks. Gonzalez registered three saves in net and Maura Chawner recorded one stop as the duo combined on the Nittany Lions ninth shutout of the season.
