Volleyball wins five-set thriller over Alvernia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team picked up a thrilling 3-2 victory over Alvernia University in an non-conference contest on Thursday night.

The Nittany Lions improved to 6-14 on the season, while the Golden Wolves dropped to 10-8 on the year.

Alvernia took the opening set by a 25-22 margin, then Berks evened the match with a victory by the same score. The visitors picked up another 25-22 win in the third set to lead 2-1 in the match, but the Nittany Lions pulled away in the fourth set with at 25-19 triumph. In the decisive fifth set, Berks jumped out to a 9-0 lead behind the strong serving of Libby Swoyer. The Golden Wolves battled back and got to as close at 12-11. A service error by Alvernia followed by back-to-back kills by Makenzie Shoop and Katelyn Williams ended the match with a 15-11 score in the Nittany Lions favor.

Berks had five players recorded double figures in kills, led by Jordan Thompson with 13. Aubrey Hunt and Diana Stoltzfus each recorded 12 kills, while Shoop and Williams both had 11. Riley Kovach pulled down a team-high 17 digs, Hunt and Stoltzfus each had 12. As a team, Berks recorded 15 service aces, led by Swoyer with eight, while Stoltzfus, Thompson, and Kovach all had two. Swoyer registered a season-high 50 assists and added seven digs.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Washington D.C. for a tri-match this weekend. They face Gallaudet University in an United East contest at 12 p.m., followed by a non-conference battle with Roanoke College at 2 p.m.
