Nittany Lions win 1-0 thriller over Albright

READING, PA - Sara Hathaway scored in the 73rd minute and the defense played strong the entire match to lift the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over nearby rival Albright College in non-conference action on Tuesday night.

The Nittany Lions improved to 5-6-1 on the season, while Albright drops to 4-7-2 overall.

Berks controlled possession through most of the first half, outshooting Albright by an 8-2 margin (3-1 on goal). But the teams went into the halftime intermission deadlocked in a scoreless tie.

The Nittany Lions came out strong in the second half with a couple of corners and shot by Diana Pon that slammed off the cross bar at the 52:21 mark. Ashley Olivares then had a shot stopped by the keeper and another one go just wide of the target within a two minute stretch. At the 72:07 mark of the game, Berks made a couple of nice pass to get through the Albright defense. Paige Borkowski crossed a ball in the box from the end line and Hathaway beat the keeper inside the right post to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.

Following the goal, the Berks defense kept the Albright offense at bay and allowed just two corner kicks and no shots. Berks nearly added to its lead in the 80th minute on a shot by Pon, but LeVan was there to make another save for Albright.

For the game, Berks outshot Albright by 17-2 margin and held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. Sophia Gonzalez picked up the shutout win after recording one save, while LeVan had six saves for Albright.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for an United East contest on Saturday, October 14 at 3:30 p.m.
