Women's soccer blanks Farmingdale State, 2-0

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team earned its second straight shutout victory after topping Farmingdale State College, 2-0, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions won back-to-back games for the first time this season to improve to 4-5-1 overall, while the Rams drop to 4-5-2 this fall.

Carly Fox scored a pair of goals in the second half with Diana Pon providing the assist on both scores. Sophia Gonzalez and the Nittany Lions defense put up a clean slate en route to the teams fourth shutout of the season.

Fox nearly put the Nittany Lions ahead 1-0 in the 8th minute with a breakaway, but the Rams keeper was able to get a hand on the shot and knocked it out for a corner kick. On the ensuing corner, Pon earned a penalty kick after getting knocked down in the box. Pon's attempt trickled just wide of the post to keep the game knotted in a scoreless tie.

Both teams managed a few chances on offense in the remainder of the half, but neither were able to find the back of the net.

After a Rams foul, Berks methodically worked the ball up the field and Pon passed through some to defenders to Fox. Fox got the pass in stride and continued toward the net, ripping a line drive past the keeper and inside the left post give Berks a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute.

The Nittany Lions maintained its lead as Farmingdale State made a late push with a shot and several corner kicks over the next 15 minutes. In the 85th minute, Pon again played ahead to Fox, who took a few dribbled and chipped a shot over the keepers head to put the game out of reach. Fox now has four goals on the season, while Pon raised her assist total to three.

Gonzalez finished the contest with three saves, to go along with her stellar play denying the Rams crossing attempts. Gonzalez was aided on defense by the strong effort from Morgan Kline, Faith Wavershak, Lauren LeKites, Devon Deery, and Paige Borkowski.

Berks outshot the Rams by a 9-6 margin (6-3 on goal) and held a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.
