Nittany Lions earn season sweep over St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team overcame a double-digit halftime deficit to earn a thrilling 74-69 victory on the road over St. Mary's College in United East action on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions won for the fourth time in five games to improve to 7-10 on the season and 5-5 in the United East, while SMC drops to 8-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference. Berks defeated the Seahawks by a score of 78-76 on January 20.

The Seahawks never trailed in the first half and eventually carried a 17 point lead (37-20) into the intermission. The home squad expanded its lead to 22 points with 18:53 remaining in the half. The Nittany Lions battled back and made 3-pointer by Josh Gardner made the deficit seven points (52-45) with 12:45 to play. Andre Ballard drilled a 3-pointer with 6:27 to go to give Berks its first lead of the afternoon at 59-57. Jeff Lorah went 6-for-6 down the stretch from the free throw line to secure the win for Berks.

Isaiah Cotten led the Nittany Lions with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor and a 4-for-5 showing at the foul line. Lorah, Gardner, and Darik Tannis-Harriet all finished with 13 points, while Ballard had 11 and Matt Gingerich added eight. Tannis-Harriet handed out a team-high five assists and Gardner recorded three. Ballard led the team with three steals, while Gingerich had a team-best four boards.

Micah Henry led the Seahawks with 23 points, seven assists, and two blocked shots. Keon Wright chipped in 16 points, while Daryn Alexander and Gary Grant both had seven.

The Nittany Lions travel to Penn State Abington for an United East contest on Tuesday, January 31 at 7 p.m.
