Hot shooting leads MBB past Seahawks

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball scorched the nets from long distance en route to a thrilling 78-76 victory over St. Mary's College in an United East contest on Friday evening.

The Nittany Lions improved to 4-9 on the season and 2-4 in the United East, while the Seahawks drop to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Jeff Lorah drained a pair of 3-pointers in the final 33 seconds of the first half to give Berks a 43-41 advantage going into the intermission. SMC scored the first eight points of the second half to build a 49-43 lead. The teams exchanged leads and tie scores, with the Seahawks gaining as much as a six point cushion (64-58) with 7:52 to play in regulation. The Nittany Lions had their biggest lead of the second half at four points with 25 seconds left after Luke Collins made 1-of-2 at the foul line. The Seahawks, trailing by two (78-76), had a missed 3-pointer and got the offensive rebound, but Josh Mingledolph blocked another 3-point try and got the rebound to secure the win down the stretch.

Lorah shot 8-of-12 from the floor and went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc to finish with a contest-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.. Collins, who also drained five 3-pointers, had 18 points and three steals. Darik Tannis-Harriet chipped in nine points, eight boards, and two steals, while Jaedon Mast added nine points and three rebounds. Josh Gardner had seven points, followed by Isaiah Cotten with six. The big men Brody Bolyn and Grant Watson provided valuable defense down low in the second half. Bolyn recorded three blocked shots and Watson had the biggest stuff of the night with 32 seconds remaining in the game.

The Seahawks had five players score in double figures, led by Micah Henry with 16. Gary Grant had 13 points and a game-high 20 boards, while Daryn Alexander added 13 points and three assists. Hollique Johnson and Wayne Mason, Jr. both contributed 12 points.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University in an United East contest on Saturday, January 21 at 3 p.m.
