Volleyball splits second day of Bearcat Challenge

LATROBE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team split a pair of games on the second day of the Bearcat Challenge on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions fell, 3-1, to host St. Vincent College, but bounced back with a 3-1 victory over the University of Pitt-Greensburg.

In the setback to St. Vincent, the Nittany Lions won the opener 25-23, but the Bearcats grabbed victories in the next three games (25-17, 25-21, 26-24). Makenzie Shoop and Cassie Shoupe tied for the team lead with 10 kills, followed by Julia Rathsam with six kills to go along with 24 assists. Riley Kovach finished with a contest-high 24 digs, followed by Rathsam with 14 and Shoupe with 11. Shoupe, Kayla Zelonka, Jordan Thompson, and Sarah Nichols all recorded three block assists.

In the win over the Bobcats, Berks won the first game 25-21, but Pitt-Greensburg took the second set 25-22. The Nittany Lions closed out the match in solid fashion with wins by scores of 25-13 and 25-16. Zelonka tied for a contest-high with 13 kills, followed by Shoop with nine and Adriana Leon-Vazquez with seven. Rathsam had five kills, 40 assists, 10 digs, and four service aces. Kovach hauled in a game-high 20 digs. Diana Stoltzfus and Hailey Miller each chipped in two aces.

The Nittany Lions will host their home opener against Elizabethtown College on Tuesday, September 6 at 6 p.m.
