Volleyball wins five-set thriller in season opener

LATROBE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up the 2022 season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Westminster College on the first night of the Bearcat Challenge on Friday evening.

The Nittany Lions took the first game by a score of 25-15, but Westminster evened up the score with a 25-20 win in the second. Berks came out on top in a 30-28 nail biter in the third, but again the Titans tied it up with a 25-13 triumph in the fourth. Berks took care of business in the decisive fifth game with a 15-4 victory.

Makenzie Shoop had a contest-best and career-high 17 kills to go along with five digs. Cassie Shoupe followed with 10 kills, 12 digs, four service aces and a block assist, while Kayla Zelonka chipped in nine kills, three digs, three assists, and a block assist. Julia Rathsam handed out 36 assists and notched 17 digs, while adding four kills, a block assist, and an ace. Freshman Riley Kovach recorded a team-high 21 digs, while Diana Stoltzfus added 10.

Berks will face tournament host St. Vincent College at 11 a.m., followed by University of Pitt-Greensburg at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 3.
