WVB downs Gwynedd Mercy, 3-1

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team defeated Gwynedd Mercy University, 3-1, in non-conference action at the Beaver Athletics and Wellness Center on Tuesday night.

The Griffins (2-4) pulled out the first set thriller by a score of 26-24, but Berks won the second in convincing fashion, 25-15. The Nittany Lions (3-2) held off a late rally to win the third game, 25-21, and then come out on top in a 26-24 win in the clinching fourth set.

Berks had three players finish in double figures in kills, led by Makenzie Shoop with 15. Aubrey Hunt followed with a season-best 12 kills, while Cassie Shoupe chipped in 10 kills. Shoupe and Riley Kovach tied for the team lead with 21 digs, while Hunt had 15 and Julia Rathsam had 12. Rathsam dished out 42 assists to go along with two block assists. Shoupe also recorded a team-high three service aces, followed by Jordan Thompson and Kovach with two each.

The Nittany Lions will travel north for a tri-match on Saturday, September 17. They will face host Lycoming College at 11 a.m., followed by a tilt with Wilson College at 1 p.m.
