Men's soccer tops Marywood, 2-0

READING, PA – The Penn State Berks men's soccer team strong together 90 strong minutes of play en route to downing Marywood University, 2-0, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions earned their first win of the season, while the Pacer drop to 2-2 on the year.

Berks came out of the gates strong with a shot and a corner kick in the first four minutes. Around the six minute mark, the Nittany Lions earned another corner kick. Ash Deery sent a grounder toward the near post, which Matt Holmes deflected in the top near corner to give Berks a 1-0 lead at the 6:40 mark.

The Nittany Lions kept the pressure on throughout the half, but Owen Love and Shane Gleason were both denied by the Marywood keeper. Ethan Brazier made a pair of saves on the only two balls in the first half that were on target.

In the second half, the Berks offense continued to apply pressure, but they were hampered by a handful of offside infractions.

In the 74th minute, Gleason worked his to the end line, where he crossed a ball in front of the net. Love came flying in and used a diving header to beat the keeper with his first score of the season.

From there, Brazier made another save to secure the shutout victory. Brazier was helped by the solid play of the defensive line of Deery, Caleb Fatkin, Tanner Karas, and Jack Salmon.

Berks held an 8-6 edge in shots and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Albright College in a non-conference contest on Thursday, September 15 at 7 p.m.
