Women's soccer blanks Wilkes in season opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team opened up the 2022 campaign with a 2-0 shutout victory over Wilkes University in non-conference action on Thursday night.

The opening day victory was the first since 2013 and just the third time in program history.

Berks attacked from the get-go, with Sara Hathaway putting a shot on net 24 seconds into the contest, but Hannah Landis made an athletic save to deny the goal. From there, both teams exchanged some shots and corner kicks.

At the 36:22 mark, the Colonels failed to clear the ball out of their defensive zone. Diane Pon collected the ball, shook a couple of defenders and ripped a line drive past the keeper to put Berks ahead 1-0.

The score would remain that way until the 61st minute, when another failed clear by the visitors was taken advantage of by Berks. Pon collected the loose ball, tapped it over to Hathaway, who then delivered a shot into the far corner to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 edge.

Freshman keeper Sophia Gonzalez was on top of her game all night, finishing with seven saves and coming off the line to intercept several cross attempts. She was aided in the shutout by the strong defensive play from Jeyda Duran, Mary King, Morgan Kline, Olivia Gillick, and Faith Wavershak.

Both teams put seven shots on target and the Colonels held a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Moravian University for a non-conference contest on Saturday, September 3 at 7 p.m.
