Men's soccer drops season opener to Wilkes

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback to Wilkes University in the 2022 season opening non-conference contest on Thursday evening.

The Colonels got on the board at the 4:45 mark with a well placed shot inside the left post. In the 19th minute, a defensive breakdown by Berks led to a breakaway score to give Wilkes a 2-0 edge. The Nittany Lions defense tightened up and kept the score the same heading into the halftime break.

Out of the intermission, the Colonels got called for a foul deep in their own territory. Berks made them pay when Ash Deery delivered a free kick into the box that Gavin Dai headed past the keeper to make it 2-1 in the 65th minute.

The wind was knocked out of the Nittany Lions sails when a foul in the box led to a penalty kick, which was successfully converted to make it 3-1 in Wilkes' favor with in the 68th minute.

Ethan Brazier finished with four saves in net for Berks, while his counterpart Zach Tone made five stops in the winning effort.

The Nittany Lions will host nearby foe Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Saturday, September 3 at 1 p.m.
