Baseball sweeps doubleheader at Brandywine

ASTON, PA - Chad Evans had a big day at the plate to help lead the Penn State Berks baseball team to a sweep of Penn State Brandywine in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday night. Berks pulled away late for a 5-3 win in game one, while they scored early and often and later held off a late push for an 11-8 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, Joe Gramignano led off the game with a single and Colin Templin followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Nate Trovinger brought in Gramignano with a safety squeeze and Evans followed with a home run to left for an early 3-0 lead.

After a 1-2-3 bottom of the first, Brandywine evened the game with three runs in the second inning. The score would remain that way until the top of the sixth when Evans got things started with a one out single. An error Brandywine and a single by Tyler McGarvey loaded the bases for Berks. Evans came in with the go-ahead run on a balk and Kolbie Reeser added an insurance run after scoring on a passed ball.

Colin Wilson got back-to-back strikeouts and a foul out to first to pick up the complete-game victory. The freshman right-hander allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out a career-high nine batters. With the win, Wilson improved to 3-0 on the season with 18 strikeouts in 26.2 innings of work.

Evans came up a double short of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a triple, homer, two RBI, and two runs scored. Gramignano finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Templin had a double and scored a run.

In game two, Berks started out strong with three runs in the first inning and five more in the top of the second. They added three more in the fourth for an 11-0 cushion, but the home squad got one run in the bottom half. Brandywine added four more in the fifth and then three in the seventh to make it an 11-8 ballgame.

Evans blasted another first inning two-run home run to give him three moon shots on the season. He finished the game 1-for-2 with three runs scored and was intentionally walked. David Rudisill swung a hot bat for the Nittany Lions, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Gramignano (two stolen bases) and Templin (RBI) each had two hits and scored twice. Trovinger scored two runs and had a stolen base, while Griffin Kay had a hit and scored a run.

Reeser made his first start and just second appearance on the mound this season. The sophomore righty allowed eight hits and five runs, while striking out six batters to earn the win. Jake Diana had a strikeout in an inning of relief and Dom Mayorca struck out two in one inning.

Berks opens up a three-game series at Penn State Harrisburg on Friday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. They will then play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch of game one set for 12 p.m.
