Baseball tops Penn College in series opener

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team kept its playoff chase alive with a thrilling 6-5 victory over Penn College in the first game of the series in United East action on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions are now 16-15 on the season and 9-10 in the United East, while Penn College 18-16 overall and 11-8 in league play.

Berks got on the board first with an RBI single by Chad Evans, but the Wildcats scratched across a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. In the third inning, the Nittany Lions got RBI singles from Evans and Tyler McGarvey. Evans scored the third run of the inning after a balk to make it 4-1. Penn College chipped away at the deficit with a run in the fifth and sixth, then the home squad plated two more in the seventh to go up 5-4. Joe Gramignano had an RBI single in the eighth and eventually scored on a passed ball to retake the lead at 6-5.

Sam Perrone, who got the final out of the seventh inning, tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Gramignano then came on in relief and set down all three batters he saved to his third save of the season. Perrone improved to 3-0 on the season after striking out two batters in 1.1 innings of relief. Alex Laudenslager allowed 10 hits and five runs (three earned), while striking out three in 6.2 innings of work.

Colin Templin went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Evans was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored. Gramignano (run) and Mcgarvey each had a hit and drove in a run, Nate Trovinger and Jase Graybill both scored a run.

The teams will play an United East doubleheader tomorrow (April 30), with first pitch of game one set for 12 p.m. If Berks can pull offf a sweep, they will earn a spot to the conference tournament.
