Baseball sweeps Gallaudet on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team picked up a crucial sweep of Gallaudet University in an United East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks won 16-3 in the opener, then had two comeback efforts in a 9-6 victory in the second game of the twinbill.

Prior to the first game, the Nittany Lions recognized seven members with Senior Day honors. Seniors Ben Berkel, Chad Evans, Joe Gramignano, Alex Laudenslager, Tyler McGarvey, Dale Murphy, and Nate Trovinger received framed game jersey's and had their career highlights read as they were joined by their parents at home plate.

In game one, the offense cruised early with nine runs in the first and seven more for all 16 of their runs. Gramignano went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, two runs scored, and stolen base. Griffin Kay had two hits (double, homer) with five RBI and two runs scored, while Colin Templin added two hits, including a home run, and scored twice. David Rudisill, McGarvey (two doubles), and Jase Graybill all were 2-for-4 with two runs scored and combined for five RBI.

Laudenslager cruised to the win with a complete-game effort in which he allowed eight hits and three runs (one earned), while striking out three.

In game two, the Bison plated two runs in the top of the first and added another one in the third for an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth with two outs and nobody on, Nick Bergeman, Gramignano, and Templin hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Trovinger hit a grounder to short that was bobbled and he was able to beat the throw to make score a run and Evans drew a bases loaded walk to bring in another to make it 3-2 in favor of Gallaudet.

In the bottom of the sixth, Templin tripled to left center to score Gramignano and Trovinger grounded out to third to bring in Templin and put Berks ahead 4-3. Logan Ewert extended the lead to 5-3 with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh.

Gallaudet would retake the lead (6-5) with three runs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half, Trovinger doubled and Evans followed with a two-run shot over the fence in left for a 7-6 lead. Colin Amerine laced a single into the left center gap to score Kolbie Reeser and Kay to extend the lead to 9-6.

Gramignano came on in the ninth to slam the door and earn his second save of the season. The right-hander struck out the first batter then gave up an infield single. The next batter hit into a 5-4-3 double play to give the Nittany Lions the win.

Evans finished 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Templin, Trovinger, and Ewert all had two hits, a run, and an RBI.

After allowing two runs in the first, Berkel settled in and only surrendered one more run over the next five innings. He finished with six hits allowed and struck out three. Colin Wilson allowed three runs and struck out two in 1.2 innings of relief. Sam Perrone got one out in the eighth to work out of a jam and earn the win, his second of the season.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the regular season with a three-game set against Penn College beginning on Friday, April 29 at 3 p.m.
