Baseball edges Gallaudet in series opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team rallied and then held off a rally to hold on for a 6-5 victory over Gallaudet University in an United East contest on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions improved to 13-15 overall and 6-10 in United East play, while the Bison drop to 5-27 on the year and 1-15 in conference action.

Both pitchers were cruising through the first three innings, but the Berks defense fell apart in the top of the fourth. The leadoff batter for the Bison reached on catcher's interference, followed by an infield single and another error to load the bases. The next batter hit a shallow fly to the outfield that was dropped, allowing all of the runners to move up a base and giving Gallaudet a 1-0 lead. The next two batters had singles to make it 3-0 with no outs and the bases still loaded. Josh Miiller took matters into his own hits and struck out the next three batters.

In the bottom of the fourth, Chad Evans singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Griffin Kay to make it 3-1. In the bottom of hte sixth, Colin Templin walked and Nate Trovinger singled with a perfect push bunt to the right side. Evans turned around to sacrifice, but pulled back and slapped a single to where the shortstop was originally playing at. On the play, Templin scored from second, but Trovinger was thrown out trying to go first to third. Kolbie Reeser singled to left and moved up to second to put two runners in scoring position. Kay lifted a single to right field to score both runners to give Berks a 4-3 lead.

Berks would tack on two important insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Evans doubled to left field and moved up to third when the relay throw missed the cutoff man. Kay delivered a sacrifice fly to center to score Evans and the throw went out of play which allowed Reeser to move up to third base. During the next at bat, Reeser had a perfectly timed delay steal of home on the catcher's throw back to the pitcher to make it 6-3.

Gallaudet got a leadoff single in the ninth before a strikeout for out one, but a Berks error put runners on first and second. The next batter sliced a double down the right field line to score two runs, but a relay from Templin was able to get the runner trying to stretch a triple. Instead of the tying run being on third with one out, Berks now had two down and bases empty thanks to the relay throw. Miiller then ended the contest with another strikeout.

Miiller finished the contest with a career-high 11 strikeouts, surpassing his previous high of six which he had done twice this spring. The sophomore right-hander allowed 10 hits and five runs (one earned) while tossing his first complete-game of his college career.

Evans finished 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and three runs scored, while Kay was 2-for-3 with four runs batted in. Joe Gramignano chipped in a pair of hits, while Trovinger, Reeser and Nick Bergeman each had one. Gramignano, Evans, and Reeser all had a stolen base.

The Nittany Lions will host the Bison for in an United East doubleheader on Saturday, April 23 with first pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. Prior to the start of the doubleheader, the baseball program will recognize seven players for Senior Day.
