Berkel, Nittany Lions shutout Pitt.-Greensburg

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team put up a crooked number in the first inning and Ben Berkel tossed 7.0 innings of shutout ball in the Nittany Lions 11-0 victory over the University of Pitt.-Greensburg on Monday afternoon.

In the top of the first, Berks plated eight runs after recording three hits, four walks, and two hit batters. Nick Bergeman and Kolbie Reese both drove in a pair of runs during the scoring binge.

Berkel, who was staked to a large lead before throwing a single pitch, turned in a gem in his 2022 season debut. The senior, right-hander set down the Bobcats in order in three innings and at one point recorded eight consecutive outs. He only allowed seven baserunners and just one made it to third base. Berkel's final line was two hits and six strikeouts in 7.0 scoreless innings. Dom Mayorca tossed 2.0 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief.

Chad Evans continued his torrid start to the season, recording a career-high four hits. He had one double, one RBI, and scored a run. Bergeman finished the game with three RBI, Tyler McGarvey scored a team-high two runs. Nate Trovinger and Colin Templin each had a hit and scored run, while Joe Gramignano and Logan Ewert both scored a run and added an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will play Hilbert College on Tuesday, March 8 at 10 a.m.
