Nittany Lions swept by Bridgewater State

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped a pair of games to Bridgewater State University on a cold and windy afternoon in Myrtle Beach. Bridgewater State took the opener 1-0 in walk-off fashion in nine innings, followed by a 10-1 triumph in seven innings over the Nittany Lions in game two.

In the opener, Chad Evans allowed four hits and no runs, while striking out seven in 5.1 innings of work. Dale Murphy struck out two batters in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Jake Diana allowed four hits and one run in 1.1 relief innings. David Rudisill finished 2-for-3, while seven other starters had one hit each.

Evans seven strikeouts were a career-high, surpassing his previous best of five against Penn State Harrisburg last season. Evan's picked a runner off second base in the second inning and Colin Amerine threw a runner trying to steal in the fifth. Bridgewater didn't have a runner reach third base until the bottom of the sixth withe one out. With the runner on third, Murphy came in and got a strikeout followed by a walk. After a steal put runners on second and third, Murphy got a ground out to short to end the threat. Diana worked out of a jam in the eighth, but three straight singles in the ninth spelled trouble. The Nittany Lions got the lead runner at home for out number one, but the next batter singled to shallow center field to score the winning run from third.

The Nittany Lions had runners on first and second with one out or less in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. They were unable to advance the runners in any of those four innings and two had inning ending double plays. For the game, Berks finished with nine runners left base, while the Bears stranded six.

In game two, Josh Miiller started out strong but some snake bitten by some miscues in the top of the third. He struck out the first batter looking and the second batter swinging, but the pitch was in the dirt and the runner made it to first base. The Bears got four runs in the inning after two hits, two Berks errors, and two wild pitches. Miiller recorded the rare, but unwanted feat of striking out four batters in the inning.

Miiller finished the game with five hits and six runs (two earned), while striking out six in 4.0 innings. Sam Perrone struck out one in 1.0 innings of relief, Murphy had a strikeout in the final 2.0 innings of the game.Joe Gramignano had an RBI single in the seventh to score Logan Ewert, who drew a walk earlier in the inning. Kolbie Reese was 1-for-4 with a double, while Colin Templin finished 1-for-3.

The Nittany Lions finish off their spring trip with a game against Dean College on Friday, March 11 at 9 a.m.
