MBB tops Wells in United East opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit and held off a late rally in an 82-81 victory over Wells College in United East action on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in the United East, while the Express fall to 3-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

The Express led by as many in 16 points in the first half, but Berks chipped away and trailed by just one point at the intermission (44-43). In the second half, the Nittany Lions took their first lead of the day when an Isaiah Cotten layup gave Berks a 59-57 lead with 11:56 remaining in the game. After several ties and lead changes, Berks grew its widest lead of the day as they were ahead 80-73 with 5:41 remaining. The Express battled back to even the contest at 80-all, but a layup by Cotten gave Berks an 82-80 lead with 46 seconds remaining.

The Express made one of two shots at the line to make it a one point game, 82-81. Wells got a steal and were on a fast break, but Andre Ballard chased down the dribbler and blocked the shot from behind with 14 seconds remaining. With Berks clinging to the one-point advantage, the entire gym watched as the Wells desperation half court attempt at the buzzer hit off the top of the backboard.

Ballard finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Jeff Lorah and Darik Tannis-Harriet both had 12 points. Thomas Mandell added a season-high 11 points, followed by Cotten with 10 and Luke Collins with eight. Lorah grabbed seven boards, Cotten and Hassan Koroma both recorded five.

Terrance Clayton-Murphy finished with 22 points, while Ransel Rodriguez had 18 points, nine boards, seven assists, and four steals.

The Nittany Lions will travel to the University of Valley Forge for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, December 7 at 7 p.m.
