Women's soccer wins 8th conference title, Clapper named MVP

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team will return to the NCAA Tournament after defeating Penn State Harrisburg, 3-0 in overtime, on Saturday afternoon in the United East title game. Emily Clapper was selected as the United East Women's Soccer MVP after finishing the tournament with three goals, including two in the championship match.

This is the eighth time that Berks has won the conference crown, the first time since the 2019 season. Berks and Harrisburg have faced each other in each of the last championship contests, with Berks now having won two of the three.

The teams played to a scoreless 0-0 draw when the played in the regular season on October 1 and today's game was going the same way. Both teams had a couple of excellent scoring opportunities, but neither was able to capitalize. In the 90 minutes of regulation, Berks had an 11-5 edge in shots (5-4) on goal, while Harrisburg held a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks. At the end of regulation, the contest was still in a scoreless tie. This is the first season that the postseason changed its format to two 10-minute overtime periods, with no golden goal.

In the first overtime period, Kylee Altland put a shot on target, but Sophia Gonzalez was able to make the save. At the 95:41 mark of the period, Sara Hathaway fed a pass across the box to Emily Clapper, who beat the keeper with a shot to the far back post. Clapper, her teammates, and the fans went wild, but with the new rules there was still nearly 15 minutes of action to be played. In the 98th minute, Ashley Jocham scored after another nice pass from Hathaway.

Berks was able to build a comfortable three goal lead early in the second overtime at the 103rd minute. Diana Pon dribbled past defenders in the center of the field a passed the ball to the left side of the box. Clapper took one touch and sent a low liner inside the far right post for her second score of the contest.

The best scoring chance for Harrisburg in the 106th minute on a free kick, but Sarah Toche-Manley's shot sailed just above the cross bar.

Gonzalez finished the contest with six saves to earn her eighth shutout of the season. She was aided by the strong play by the defensive unit of Mary King, Morgan Kline, Olivia Gillick, and Faith Wavershak, while the midfield play from Clapper, Pon, Jeyda Duran, and Carsyn Hyman was solid on both sides of the ball.

Berks will find out who its opponent will be and where they will travel during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, November 7 at 2 p.m. Access to the video of the selection show can go by click here.
