Women's soccer falls to No. 5 Messiah at NCAAs

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Penn State Berks women's soccer team saw its 2022 season draw to end with a 3-0 setback to No. 5 ranked Messiah University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions hung tight with the perennial powerhouse as the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie. The Falcons outshot Berks by a 4-0 margin in the first 45 minutes of action.

In the second half, Messiah broke through with a goal at the 51:04 mark after a deflection off the crossbar deflected across the goal line. They were able to add on to the lead in the 57th minute and tacked on another in the 67th minute.

Sara Hathaway and Emily Clapper each had shots, but neither could find the back of the net.

Sophia Gonzalez finished the contest with nine saves. She was helped with the strong play out of Mary King, Morgan Kline, Olivia Gillick, and Faith Wavershak on the defensive line.

The Nittany Lions finished the season with a 13-6-2 overall record. The team will bid farewell to seniors Clapper, Hathaway, and Jeyda Duran. The trio will be difficult to replace, but the Nittany Lions will have their sights set on a return trip to the NCAA Tournament next season.
