Nittany Lions top St. Mary's, heading to 10th straight conference title game

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team defeated St. Mary's College, 3-1, in the United East Semifinal round on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, Berks will make its 10th straight appearance in the United East Championship contest.

The Nittany Lions improved to 12-5-2 overall, while St. Mary's concluded its season with a record of 7-9-4.

Berks wasted no time jumping out to a lead after Diana Pon found Emily Clapper open in front of the net. Clapper took the cross from Pon and beat the keeper inside the near post for a 1-0 advantage just 2:36 into the contest.

The Seahawks defense tightened up and did not allow Berks any more first half goals. The Nittany Lions finished the opening half with 10 shots, five of which were on target.

In the second half, Sara Hathaway played a ball through ahead to Pon, who took a couple of touches and sent a line drive to the far back corner to make it 2-0 in the 50th minute. In the 65th minute, the duo switch roles as Pon sent a pass over the defense and Hathaway put a shot into the far corner.

The Seahawks got on the board with a score by Julia Kline at the 88:37 mark, but the deficit was too much to overcome at that point.

Sophia Gonzalez made one save to earn the win, while her counterpart Audra Haines finished with six stops.
