Volleyball splits United East opener

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team split a pair of five-set thrillers as they opened up United East play on Saturday afternoon. Berks dropped a 3-2 decision to host SUNY Morrisville, then Berks won 3-2 against Penn State Harrisburg.

Against the Mustangs, Berks took the first set by a 25-22 margin, but SUNY Morrisville won 25-10 and 25-17 in the next two. The Nittany Lions rallied for a riveting 27-25 victory to force a decisive fifth set. The Mustangs came out strong and emerged with the win by a 15-9 margin.

Cassie Shoupe racked up 18 kills, followed by Makenzie Shoop with 14 and Aubrey Hunt had 13. Julia Ratsham hand out 45 assists, while Riley Kovach recorded 20 digs. Jordan Thompson had three block assists and two service aces, while Shoupe and Hunt both had a pair of block assists.

In the second game, Harrisburg took the opening set by a 29-27 margin. Berks then took the next two by a 25-15 and 25-16 count. Harrisburg evened things at 2-2 with a 25-17 score. Berks pulled out the victory with a 15-11 triumph in the decisive fifth set.

Shoupe and Shoop tied for the team lead with 14 kills, while Hunt followed with 13 and Thompson had nine. Rathsam recorded 51 assists, 16 digs, and two aces. Kovach recorded 30 digs, while Hunt had 17 and Shoupe had 10.

As a team, Berks recorded 16 service aces, led by Shoupe with six. Thompson and Diane Stoltzfus each had three.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Arcadia University for a non-conference contest on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m.
