Late goal by Scranton sinks Berks

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team dropped a tight match, 2-1, to the University of Scranton in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night.

The Nittany Lions dropped to 10-5-2 on the season, while the Royals now sit at 13-2-1 overall.

In the first half, Carsyn Hyman played a ball into the corner for Emily Clapper. The senior midfielder took a few touches and delivered a perfectly placed line drive over the keeper's head and into top right corner to give Berks a 1-0 lead at the 18 minute mark of the period. The goal was Clapper's team-leading 14th of the season, while the assist was Hyman's second of the year.

In the 30th minute, the Royals collected a loose ball in front of the net and were able to find the back of the net to even the contest at 1-all.

The score remained 1-1 heading into the halftime break and deep into the second half. After Berks was whistled for a foul just outside the box in the 85th minute, the Royals were able to connect a header off of a free kick into the back corner to go up 2-1. The visitors were able to hold on the rest of the way to pick up the win.

Sophia Gonzalez made five saves in net, while Nicole Olson finished with one stop in the first half.

The Nittany Lions will face SUNY Morrisville on Saturday, October 29 at 4 p.m.
