Volleyball wins a pair of five-set thrillers

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team defeated host St. Mary's College, 3-2, and later won by a similar score against Lancaster Bible College for a pair of United East victories on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 15-8 overall and 5-1 in the United East and have now won six straight contests.

Against the Seahawks (6-13, 1-4 United East), Berks won by game scores of 25-19, 18-25, 29-27, 23-25, 15-9.

Makenzie Shoop had a team-high 15 kills, followed by Cassie Shoupe with 12 and Jordan Thompson with 11. Julia Rathsam recorded 50 assists, 12 digs, six kills, two block assists, and a service ace. The Nittany Lions collected 115 digs, led by Riley Kovach with 33, Aubrey Hunt (27) and Shoupe (22) also surpassed 20 digs. Kovach had six of the Nittany Lions six service aces, Hunt added three and Thompson had two.

In the second match against the Chargers (15-11, 2-3 United East), Berks won by scores of 25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 27-25, 15-10.

Shoupe recorded 15 kills, 12 digs, five aces, and two block assists. Sarah Nichols collected a career-high seven block assists to go along with five kills and a solo block. Kovach collected 35 digs, followed by Diana Stoltzfus with 14. Rathsam, who had 13 digs, also had 45 assists, three kills, and two block assists.

The Nittany Lions will host Manor College in a non-conference contest on Monday, October 24 at 6 p.m. Monday's game will be Senior Day recognition as well as a Mental Health Awareness Game.
