Men's golf places second in season opener

ORWIGSBURG, PA - The Penn State Berks men's golf team opened up the 2021-22 campaign on a high note, placing second out of six teams competing in the Albright College Fall Invitational this afternoon on the par-72, 6541-yard Schuylkill Country Club. (Results)

The Nittany Lions collected a team score of 324 strokes, which was seven strokes behind winning Alvernia University (317). Lebanon Valley College finished in third place (338), followed by the College of Mount St. Vincent (355) in fourth place. FDU-Florham (370) and host Albright College (371) rounded out the participating teams.

Drew Morris picked up where he left off last spring, finishing in second place with a 75 (+3) which trailed individual champion Luke Fagley (Alvernia) by three strokes. Morris had a 37 on the front-nine and finished with a 38 on the back.

Gunnar Wegscheider made a strong collegiate debut, shooting an 80 (+8) to finished tied for sixth in the field of 30 golfers. Fellow freshmen Derek Jopp and Kolin Grogesky both had stellar starts to their college career. Jopp placed ninth after carding an 83, while Grogesky was tied for 14th with an 86.

The Nittany Lions will compete in the Ursinus College Fall Invitational on Tuesday, September 21 at 1 p.m. at Raven's Claw Golf Course in Pottstown, Pa.
