Women's soccer plays to 1-1 draw with Moravian

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team evened the contest in the 84 minute and neither team was able to find the winning goal over the remainder of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime as the Nittany Lions and Moravian University played to a 1-1 draw.

Play remained mostly in the midfield during the early part of the contest, before the Greyhounds were able to break through with the first goal of the game in the 19th minute. Alexa Brown crossed the ball in front of the box and Megan Chesney was able to slot it inside the near post for a 1-0 edge. Over the remainder of the half, both teams narrowly missed out on scoring opportunities that were either stopped by the keeper or just went wide of the target.

The second half saw similar action with both teams applying pressure and generating scoring opportunities, but neither team could capitalize. Moravian committed a foul just outside the right side of 18-yard box to set piece for the Nittany Lions. Jeyda Duran took the free kick and sent the ball toward the goal area, but it was knocked around and sent rolling back toward the edge of the box. Mary King came rushing in from the midfield and sent a line drive over the keeper's head in the middle of the net to knot the game at 1-all.

The two goal scorers of the day, Chesney (Moravian) and King (Berks) each nearly put their teams ahead in the final minute of regulation. Chesney put a shot on goal in the 86th minute, but Savannah McNeal, who was clutch all day, came up with the big save. With a 1:07 left to play, Moravian again committed a foul outside the box, this time head on toward the goal. King drove a shot with her left foot toward the top left corner, but Paige Harrison got her hand on it to make the stop.

The first overtime period had two corner kicks and two shots by Moravian. The next extra frame had three shots by the Greyhounds and two by Berks, but no shots by either team were a real threat to end the game.

McNeal, playing in just her second college contest, turned in a solid performance in net for the Nittany Lions. The freshman goalkeeper finished with 10 saves, while also thwarting several corners and crosses throughout the 110 minutes of action. Payce Korpics collected two saves in the first half, while Harrison made five saves over the remainder of the contest.

Overall, Moravian put 11 shots on goal, while Berks placed eight on target. The Greyhounds held a 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Franklin & Marshall College for a non-conference contest on Sunday, September 5 at 1 p.m.
