Women's volleyball opens up season at Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up the 2021 season with a pair of setbacks at the Battlefield Classic on Friday evening, hosted by Gettysburg College. Berks fell 3-1 in the opener against Messiah College, followed by a 3-0 sweep by host Gettysburg.

Messiah took the opening game by a score of 25-10, but the Nittany Lions countered with a 25-21 triumph in the second. The Falcons nabbed the third game by a 25-16 score and clinched the win by a score of 25-14 in the fourth.

Sarah Nichols and Kayla Zelonka tied for the team lead in kills with nine, followed by Cassie Shoupe with eight and Madison Wright with six. Julia Rathsam handed out 32 assists to go along with 10 digs and two service aces. Natalia Perez recorded a team-high 15 digs, while also adding three assists and two aces. Shoupe matched Rathsam and Perez with two aces.

The Bullets won the opening game 25-10, followed by tight scores of 25-22 and 25-23 in the final two games.

Shoupe again recorded eight kills, while Nichols added six and Makenzie Shoop had four. Rathsam dished out 20 assists and recorded nine digs, which was tied with Shoupe for the team lead. Wright recorded a pair of kills and aces.

Berks will continue the Battlefield Classic with a pair of contests on Saturday. The Nittany Lions will face Montclair State University at 10 a.m., followed by Penn State Altoona at 12 p.m.
