Women's volleyball sweeps Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep on the road over Gwynedd Mercy University in non-conference action on Wednesday night.

The Nittany Lions won by scores of 25-17, 26-24, 25-21 to improve to 7-9 on the season, while the Griffins drop to 5-9 overall.

The Nittany Lions had three players finish with double digit kills, led by Cassie Shoupe. The junior outside hitter slammed a team-high 13 kills, while committing only one error in 28 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage. Shoupe also added eight digs, one solo block, and one service ace. Makenzie Shoop followed with 11 kills to go with nine digs and an ace. Sarah Nichols was a force at the net as she chipped in 10 kills, two solo blocks, and two block assists Kayla Zelonka added seven kills and two solo blocks. Julia Rathsam had 38 assists and assisted on two blocks. Marie Durkota collected a contest-high 12 digs, followed by Shoop and Madison Hetrick with nine.

In the first set, Berks recorded 15 kills and committed just two errors for a .433 hitting percentage. They followed with 16 kills and a .270% in a thrilling 26-24 win in the second set.

The Nittany Lions will host a tri-match on Saturday, October 2. They will face Lycoming College at 11 a.m. and Rowan College at 3 p.m.
