Women's volleyball drops two in home tri-match

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball dropped a pair of contests in a home tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions fell 3-2 to Lycoming College and suffered a 3-1 setback to Rowan University in final contest of the day.

In the opener, Berks took the first set by a score of 25-14, but the Warriors came back with a 27-25 triumph in the second and took the lead after a 25-11 win in the third. The Nittany Lions won a 25-14 to force a decisive fifth set, where they were edged 15-10.

Cassie Shoupe had a team-high 14 kills, 17 digs, and four service aces. Makenzie Shoop followed with 13 kills and Amelia Magazzu added eight. Sarah Nichols, who had six kills, recorded three block assists, while Magazzu and Julia Rathsam each had two. Marie Durkota notched 14 digs, Natalia Perez had 13 and Rathsam recorded 12. In addition, Rathsam handed out 40 assists.

In the second game, the Profs won 25-15 in the first game, but Berks battled for a 29-27 victory in the second game. Rowan was able to close out the match by scores of 25-16 and 25-17.

Shoupe was again the leader in kills and digs after recorded 13 and 18, respectively. Shoop chipped in 12 kills, followed by Kayla Zelonka with nine and Nichols with eight. Nichols and Rathsam both finished with three block assists. Durkota added 11 digs and Perez had 10. Rathsam recorded 41 assists, to go along with three kills and two aces.

The Nittany Lions will to Immaculata University for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, October 5 at 6:30 p.m.
