Volleyball drops two at E-Town tri-match

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision on the road to host Elizabethtown College on Saturday morning. The Nittany Lions fell by the same score against York College on the second game of the tri-match in Thompson Gymnasium.

In the opener, E-Town won 25-20 and 25-16, but Berks pulled out a 25-22 third set to stay alive. The Blue Jays finished things off with a 25-17 score in the clincher.

Cassie Shoupe had a contest-high 15 kills and recorded a team-high 19 digs to go along with an assist and a service ace. Makenzie Shoop chipped in 10 kills, while Kayla Zelonka and Sarah Nichols both added eight kills. Julia Rathsam handed out 37 assists and followed Shoupe with 17 digs. Madison Hetrick and Marie Durkota reached double figures in digs with 13 and 12, respectively.

In the second game, York took the first game 25-16 and Berks followed with a 25-13 victory in the second. The Spartans won the next two, 25-17 and 25-12 to claim the win.

Shoupe and Zelonka each had six kills to tie for the team lead, followed by Hetrick and Amelia Magazzu with four each. Hetrick also added eight digs and a team-high four aces. Durkota racked up a team-best 14 digs, followed by Shoupe and Natalia Perez with nine apiece. Rathsam dished out 19 assists and recorded three kills.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a game at Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday, September 29 at 7 p.m.
