Clapper's big day leads Berks to win over Morrisville State

READING, PA - Emily Clapper recorded a season-high three goals to help lead the charge as the Penn State Berks women's soccer team defeated Morrisville State, 5-0, in an United East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 2-4-2 overall and 2-0 in the United East, while the Mustangs drop to 5-2-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in the conference. Berks recorded five goals for the second straight game and notched the second shutout of the season.

Following a handball in the box, Clapper converted the penalty kick to put Berks ahead 1-0 at the 20:16 mark of the opening period. At the 24:05 mark, Jeyda Duran played the ball over to Clapper, who then sent a shot from the left side of the box over the keeper's head and into the far right back corner for her second score of the match.

With the first half winding down, Emily Weaver had a shot slam off the crossbar, but Erna Hamzic was able to collect the rebound and beat the keeper into the top right corner at the 44:28 mark. The score was the first of Hamzic's collegiate career.

Out of the break, Berks worked the ball down the field quickly with Adriana Lepera splitting the defense with a pass to Sara Hathaway. Hathaway took one touch and beat the keeper inside the right post for a goal 18 seconds into the second half.

In the 51st minute, Hathaway played the ball ahead and Clapper was able to beat the keeper through the left side to net her third goal of the contest.

Savannah McNeal and Jackie O'Brien combined on the shutout victory in net for Berks. McNeal finished with three saves, while O'Brien had one stop. Morrisville State keeper Meaghan Miller recorded nine saves.

Berks outshot the Mustangs by a 25-7 margin (14-4 on goal) and held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Arcadia University for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, September 28 at 4 p.m.
