Men's soccer downs Mustangs, 3-1

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team turned in a strong performance en route to a 3-1 victory over Morrisville State in United East Conference play on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 1-6-1 overall and 1-1 in the United East, while Morrisville State drops to 3-5-1 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.

Berks got on the board early when Jonathan Morello flipped the ball up and over the keepers head at 5:59 into the contest. The score was set up when Mark Pirrone played a long pass to Shane Gleason, who then directed the ball to Morello out in front of the net. The goal was Morello's second of the season.

In the 22nd minute, Gleason dribbled past some defenders to the top of the box and ripped a line drive past the keeper for his second goal of the season to put the Nittany Lions ahead 2-1.

The score would remain that way until the 83rd minute when the Mustangs were awarded a penalty kick due to a Berks foul in the box. Jose Aparicio, who had stopped all three PKs he has faced this season, was not able to make the stop on Mohamed Sy's shot.

Clinging to a one-goal lead, Berks got some breathing room when Owen VanDyke beat the keeper with a low liner at the 85:13 mark of the contest. The goal was VanDyke's first of the season, Gleason had his first assist of the season on the score.

Aparicio continued his stellar play in net finishing with five saves, while his counterpart Cody Welkley had six stops.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Arcadia University for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, September 28 at 7 p.m.
