Hathaway's hat trick powers Nittany Lions past LBC

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team won a wild high scoring affair, 5-3, over Lancaster Bible College in an United East Conference contest on Wednesday evening.

Both teams came out firing with six goals 24:10 into the opening half, the final four came in a four minute and 18 second span. From that point on, the Nittany Lions defense settled in and did not allow another goal the remainder of the game.

Sara Hathaway had seven total points after recording the third hat trick of her career and adding an assist. Hathaway got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at the 8:29 mark of the first half. After the LBC defense failed to clear the ball out of the box, Hathaway collected the loose ball and sent a shot inside the top left corner for her first goal of the season. The Chargers battled back and evened the score at 1-all with a goal by Kara Huber in the 13 minute.

At the 19:52 mark, Hathaway sent a pass from the left side to the center edge of the penalty box. Maddi Monka sent a one-timer up over the keepers head for her first collegiate goal and a 2-1 lead for Berks. Just under two minutes later, Kendel Ream found the back of the net from LBC to tie it at 2-all. Less than one minute later, Monka crossed a pass to Hathaway, who then beat the keeper to the right to go ahead 3-2 in the 23rd minute. Just 85 seconds later, the Chargers again knotted the game after Adeline Moore tallied an unassisted score.

The teams exchanged some shots and corners over the remaining 25 minutes of the half, but neither was able to beat the keeper.

Out of the break, Berks rattled off five shots (three on goal) over the first seven minutes, but had nothing to show for it. In the 57th minute, Emily Clapper notched her second goal of the season to put Berks ahead 4-3. The score remained that way for awhile before Hathaway gave the Nittany Lions some breathing room with her final tally of the night in the 83rd minute.

Savannah McNeal made five saves in goal for Berks, while Erin Mikula had 11 stops for the Chargers. Berks outshot LBC 26-11 in shots (16-8 on goal) and held a 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Morrisville State in an United East Conference contest on Saturday, September 25 at 3 p.m.
