Women's soccer falls to Wilkes in season opener

EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team suffered a 4-1 setback to Wilkes University in the 2021 season opener on Thursday afternoon.

This was the Nittany Lions first contest since falling to No. 12 ranked Johns Hopkins University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on November 16, 2019. Due to the rain that came from Hurricane Ida, the layoff was extended another day for Berks to make it 656 days since they last played a match.

The Colonels controlled the bulk of the first half, outshooting Berks 8-2 and scoring two goals. In the second half, the Nittany Lions came out strong with Maddi Monka having a shot go off the post 17 seconds into the period. Emily Clapper collected the rebound and had a shot blocked, but earned Berks a corner kick. The Nittany Lions continued to put on pressure and Clapper tallied a goal with Jeyda Duran providing the assist in the 52nd minute. Madyson Sanzotta and Violet O'Donald each put a shot on goal, but keeper Hannah Landis was able to deny Berks the equalizer. A few minutes later, Erna Hamzic and Clapper were also denied by Landis. Wilkes flipped the momentum with a goal in the 71st minute and added another one 72 seconds later.

Savannah McNeal recorded three saves for Berks in her collegiate debut, while her counterpart Landis had five stops.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a home match against Moravian University on Saturday, September 4 at 1 p.m. Fans planning to attend the contest can find spectator information by clicking here.
