Baseball celebrates Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered an 11-5 and 7-4 setback to Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

Prior to the game, the Nittany Lions celebrated the career achievements of Nick Esz, Eric Gale, Pat Maloney, Bryce Stout, and Tate Yergey with Senior Day honors.

In the opening game, Berks trailed 10-1 before rallying in the bottom of the sixth. Esz drew a walk and moved up to second as Josh Hernandez reached on an error by the Wildcats. Jay Pettit roped a double to left center to score Esz and Stout's infield single brought in Hernandez. After a strikeout, Gale doubled town the left field line to score Pettit and Joe Gramignano had a sacrifice fly to score Stout, making it a 10-5 score. Penn College tacked on a run in the top of the seventh and the Nittany Lions went down in order in the bottom half to end the game.

Pettit and Stout were both 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Gale and Gramignano both had a hit and an RBI. Nate Trovinger had an RBI that brought in Yergey for Berks first run of the game.

Dale Murphy struck out four batters in 4.0 innings of work and Sam Perrone notched one strikeout in the final 1.2 innings of relief.

In game two, Berks jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Gramignano led off with a single, Pettit followed with an infield single, and Stout ripped a double over the right fielders head to score Gramignano. Yergey then sent a fly to center field that was deep enough to allow Pettit to tag up and score. Penn College evened the game at 2-all in the third, but Berks was able to get a run in the fourth. Trovinger led off with a walk, moved around to third on a single by Esz and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Gramignano. Trailing 7-3 in the ninth, Berks got a rally going when Pettit was hit by a pitch and moved up to second on an error. Pettit scored from second when the throw to first on a double play sailed wide. But the rally came up short as a fly to left ended the game.

Esz and Trovinger both went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Pettit was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Gramignano and Stout both recorded one hit and drove in a run.

Alex Laudenslager allowed three hits and two runs, while striking out two in 3.0 innings of work. Chad Evans tossed the final 6.0 innings of relief, allowing five runs (four earned), while striking out three.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the spring with a doubleheader at Penn State Abington on Saturday, May 1 at 12 p.m.
