Baseball battles in season finale at Abington

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team battled until the very end, but came up on the wrong side of an 8-1 and 7-6 decision to Penn State Abington to close out the 2021 season.

In game two, Abington plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Berks responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second to slice the deficit in half. Collin Amerine was hit by a pitch, Chad Evans walked, and Rich Mueller moved both up with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt down the third base line. The second baseman made a great play on a grounder by Nate Trovinger and got the out at first, but it was able to bring in Amerine from third. The pitcher threw the ball away at first on a chopper by Pat Maloney to bring in Evans.

Abington got a leadoff home run to left to make it 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Amerine led off the sixth with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a bunt single by Evans, and Mueller walked to load the bases. Trovinger drove a ball to center field that allowed Amerine to score and was deep enough for Evans to tag up to third. Evans was able to come in to score on a grounder by Maloney, that Abington threw to second for the force out to make it a 5-4 ballgame.

A sacrifice fly to center in the bottom of the sixth extended Abington's lead to 6-4. In the top of the seventh, Abington got two quick ground outs to shortstop before Eric Gale lined a single to center field. Amerine strolled to the plate and smoked a home run well over the fence in left field to even the game at 6-all.

An error, stolen base and single to center allowed Abington to plate a runner. They were threatening for more as a runner reached third base with one out. Joe Gramignano recorded a strikeout and a ground out to second to leave the runner stranded and keep Berks within one run. In the eighth inning, Abington got a two-out double and the runner tried to take third on a ball to the backstop, but Amerine quickly collected the ball and gunned down the runner at third.

In the top of the ninth, senior Nick Esz made the most of his final collegiate game with a line drive to center field to lead off the inning. Jay Pettit drew a walk and Tate Yergey moved up the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Abington's closer forced a pop up to second and then the team intentionally walked Amerine to load the bases. The move paid off as a sharply hit grounder was fielded and the bag was stepped on by the third baseman.

Josh Miiller settled in after the first inning to give Berks 6.1 solid innings on the mound. He finished the game with two strikeouts. Gramignano allowed only one hit, while striking out one in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Amerine finished 2-for-3 with a double, homer, two RBI, and three runs scored. Evans was 1-for-4 with two runs scored, while Gale had a hit and scored a run. Trovinger finished with two RBI and Maloney drove in one.

In the opener, a couple of fielding miscues by Berks allowed Abington to break a 1-1 tie with a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Ben Berkel was strong in 5.1 innings of work, allowing just four earned runs, while striking out five batters.

Gale was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Yergey had a double and an RBI. Gramignano added a hit and scored a run, Pettit and Trovinger also recorded singles.

The Nittany Lions battled through a lot of adversity this spring, but they battled together as a team. They played with pride and appreciation for each of their teammates. The Nittany Lions will bid farewell to Esz, Gale, Maloney, Yergey, and Bryce Stout, a group of seniors that will be sorely missed by the Berks baseball program.
