Berkel tosses gem in split with Wells

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team defeated Wells College, 9-5, in the opener, before falling 4-1 in the nightcap to earn a split with Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions defense was sloppy early on and two batters into the game Wells had runners on second and third with no outs. Starting pitcher Ben Berkel remained calm and got a strikeout, pop out to first in foul territory, and another strike out to leave the runners stranded. Berks cracked the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Nate Trovinger walked, moved up to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by Eric Gale. Joe Gramignano doubled down the left field line and Gale went from first to third. Freshman Zach Kratz lined a single through the left side of the infield to score Gale from third.

The Express cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the third, but Berks got that run back in the bottom half of the inning after Bryce Stout doubled to left and scored on a double down the left field line by Jay Pettit.

Berkel continued dealing on the mound, but a couple of miscues in the field allowed three unearned runs to put Wells ahead 4-3. Tate Yergey drove a home run over the fence in left and off the scoreboard to knot the game at 4-all in the fifth. Later in the inning, Petitt walked, Gale followed with a ground rule double to right field, and Joe Gramignano walked to load the bases. Nick Esz, who fell behind 0-2, battled at the plate and drew walk to force in Pettit from third for a 5-4 lead. Josh Hernandez followed with a walk to force in Gale and give Berks a two-run lead.

Berkel and the Nittany Lions had a 1-2-3 shutdown inning in the sixth and the offense went back to work in the bottom half. Stout smoked a ground  rule double to left center and moved up to third on a bunt single by Yergey. Pettit followed with a single to right to bring in Stout. Trovinger moved Yergey and Pettit into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and a single through the left side by Gale scored them both to give Berks a 9-4 lead.

The Express were held to one run in top of the seventh as Berkel denied any comeback effort. For the game, Berkel allowed six hits and five runs (one earned), while striking out six in a complete-game effort. This was the first complete-game of Berkel's career and the six strikeouts matched a career-best.

Gale finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Stout, Yergey, and Pettit all had two hits and scored two runs.

In game two, Josh Miiller matched Wells ace Jared Strait with zeroes through the first three innings. In the fourth, the Express took advantage of a couple of walks and a one-out single to center brought in two in the fourth.

In the fifth, Gale walked, moved up to second on a sac bunt by Esz, and scored on single down the right field line by Hernandez to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Express got a two-out single down the left field line to plate two more runs and build a 4-1 cushion in the top of the sixth. Over the next three at bats, Berks was able to get the leadoff man on base, but the offense could not get the timely hit to bring any of them in. Jack Field entered the game and worked around a two out walk to earn the save.

Miiller allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out five in 5.0 innings of work. Justin Renninger allowed two runs and struck out two in 3.0 innings of relief and Dale Murphy tossed one scoreless inning.

Stout finished 2-for-4, while Hernandez, Yergey, Trovinger, and Gramignano all recorded a hit. Hernandez also had an RBI and stole a base.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn College in their home finale on Wednesday, April 28. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
