Smith garners second straight weekly NEAC Award

LATHAM, N.Y. - For the second straight week, Briana Smith was rewarded for her strong play in the circle by being named the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.

Smith finished the week with a record of 1-1 with 15 strikeouts and no earned runs allowed, while also picking up a save. She was phenomenal in the opener against Penn College, but some bad luck for the Nittany Lions ended in a 1-0 setback. Smith allowed five hits and one unearned run, while striking out a season high 10 batters. The sophomore right-hander recorded the final two outs in a 2-1 win over the Wildcats in game two to earn the save. Smith finished of her week with three hits allowed and four strikeouts in a shutout win over Wells College.

For the season, Smith is 2-1 with 24 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched. She has held the opposition to a .174 batting average against and has surrendered just one run (unearned) this season.

Smith and the Nittany Lions will travel to Penn State Harrisburg for a NEAC doubleheader on Thursday, April 16 at 3 p.m.
